Books as birthday gifts for kids

I love giving books as gifts, but every once in a while I'll find a combination book/toy gift that is a real winner; for example, a set of pentominoes with Chasing Vermeer, by Blue Balliett (Jazz and I have loved all three of her books that have been published so far and are anxiously awaiting a new one from her).

Here is my latest favorite combo, and it was a big hit with JaneG. just last week:

The gift was Grace Lin's Where the Mountain Meets the Moon and Douglas Toys' red dragon.  JaneG. will sit with both book and dragon in her lap and is currently devouring the story.

We normally give books, but never thought of the tie-in. Very nice. Piper carried around her red Douglas dragon Starenth for several years and still sleeps with him. She also really enjoyed that book though doesn't like Grace Lin's others.

My family always knows gifts include a book, not always associated with the other gifts, but always a book. Since I started crocheting, I have found some great toy connections. I downloaded free crochet patterns for the Pig from If You Give a Pig a Pancake and the Mouse from If You Give a Mouse a Cookie to give as combo book/toy presents.

Bailey--what a great idea for small children! My kids still love those books and are bugging me to get the "new" one (something about a cat and a cupcake, I think).

Lisa--good to know about Piper's opinion of Lin's other books. I haven't checked out any of her other chapter books.

We give books for birthday presents too! I also usually give books at baby showers.

I gave you an award!

What a lovely tie in for that lovely book!

We have that same dragon, charmingly named "Fish Eater." Starenth is a much prettier name...but it can't be helped.
